The Endangered Species Act (ESA)

The Endangered Species Act is our nation’s most powerful environmental law.

WildEarth Guardians is working to safeguard the safety net of the Endangered Species Act by uncovering political manipulations and junk science, organizing grassroots advocacy, pressuring the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to fully implement the law, and demanding that Congress fully funds the Act.

Congress had the wisdom in 1973 to recognize that, without an all-out effort to prevent the extinction of the native plants, animals, and ecosystems that make this country great, we would be guilty of a great moral harm against the natural world and would place the well-being of humans at stake. Hence the Endangered Species Act was born. Today, the most important challenge in protecting endangered species is the federal government’s under-funding and under-enforcement of the ESA. This visionary act should be fully implemented and be provided with the resources necessary to defend species from extinction.

Which is why WildEarth Guardians is consistently filing lawsuits to list species on the brink of extinction under the ESA. We litigate to list because it is our responsibility as citizens to do so. Otherwise, corporate and government greed can be used to corrupt science and send species over the brink of extinction.

Science Under Siege

Sound science, not sounds-good science, should always guide decisions about ESA listings. But, political whims and junk science too often undermine the effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act. In an effort to enhance corporate profits and marginalize the public interest, the federal government has distorted science as a means of weakening regulations that protect wildlife.

The tactics used to under-implement the ESA include censoring independent scientific research, manipulating or ignoring data, silencing government biologists, attacking watchdog groups that counter the political meddling, and finally by stacking the deck with industry biostitutes whose scientific integrity extends no further than their paycheck.

Take Action

Don’t let a single extinction of our precious native wildlife happen on your watch. Defend our nation’s most powerful environmental law by joining hundreds of other citizens in being an ESA Guardian.

More than 85 percent of Americans support a strong ESA. Supporters come from all backgrounds, cultures, locations, political parties and perspectives. But they all agree that our precious natural heritage should be left intact for future generations of wildlife and people.
