Rising Up From Getting Ripped Off

Dear Guardian,

It’s Paradise, lost all over again.

Next Thursday, the Interior Department plans to auction off the North Porcupine coal lease, the largest in U.S. history: 721 million tons of coal for Peabody Energy to strip mine from the Powder River Basin of Wyoming.

WildEarth Guardians is in court right now to try to overturn these disastrous coal plans. But can you also lend your support for powering past coal? Sign the petition today!

That’s 721 million tons of federally owned coal ripped from the plains of Wyoming, including more than 5,000 acres of our own Thunder Basin National Grassland.

When burned, this coal will spew more than one billion tons of carbon into our atmosphere at a time when carbon concentrations are already reaching dangerous highs.

But the worst of it is, the Interior Department plans to sell this coal to Peabody at scandalous prices—around $1.00 a ton—so the company can turn around and export it to Asia and other overseas markets at $20 or more a ton.

In other words, we pay the costs and Peabody profits.

Well, we’ve had enough of getting ripped off.

We’re gearing up to launch a massive push back against the Interior Department’s plans to auction off our future to Peabody.

Already, WildEarth Guardians has filed suit in federal court to overturn this and three other massive coal mining proposals in the Powder River Basin.

To keep the pressure up, we’re joining protests next Thursday in Cheyenne, Wyoming against this latest coal auction. To boot, we anticipate the release of groundbreaking reports next week exposing the corruption and collusion at the Interior Department that is fueling unprecedented coal mining, undermining our climate, and blocking clean energy. Stay tuned.

You can help by getting behind our call for a time-out on coal leasing and mining in the Powder River Basin. Sign the petition today and join us in calling on the Interior Department to stop ripping off our future.

We can save Paradise from Peabody. But it’s going to take all of us, rising up and demanding the Interior Department put our future first.
