Rides With Wolves

Dear Guardian,

Riding the 2,750 miles along the Spine of the Continent. From Canada to Mexico! Punishing hills. Suffering heat. Exhilarating views. A chance to challenge myself and maybe even catch a glimpse of wolves and grizzlies.

My name is Nat Cobb, and I’m a WildEarth Guardians board member.and I’m taking on the challenge of a lifetime and I’d love your help every step of the way.

A few weekends ago I found myself in a dusty 7-11 in San Ysidro, California halfway through a 50-mile mountain bike ride. My nutritionist asked me to practice imagining that I was in the middle of a weeks-long adventure race—somewhere around mile 1,375—without any food and with another day of hard riding before the next store.

I put on my reading glasses to look at the labels while asking myself important questions like: Where is the protein? Where are the carbs? Would I eat this food? Ding dongs—no. Muscle milk—yes! After ignoring the dubious rotating burritos, my clean food list included mixed nuts, fig newtons, dried fruit, modern energy bars and a few cans of chili.

On June 13, 2014, I will begin the race of a lifetime: the Tour Divide, a 2,750 mile mountain bike route along the Continental Divide from Banff in Alberta Canada all the way south to Antelope Wells, New Mexico. There is no prize money and no corporate sponsorship.

I am riding for three things—the amazing experience, the personal challenge, and the wolves.

Riding through the beautiful wild lands along the Rockies, my route will take me through many areas that WildEarth Guardians has worked for 25 years to preserve and protect. I am going to raise $25,000 for wolves and Guardians work to protect and restore them wherever they once roamed.

I am pledging $1 per mile and already have additional pledges totaling over $6,000. Now I need your help.

Will you support me with a tax-deductible donation of .10, .25, or .50 a mile? The wolves and I will be forever grateful.

Your generous support of my ride will help Guardians advance the movement to protect the American West I love—one where wildlife thrives, wild places remain, and wild rivers flow. If you can’t sponsor me per mile, please consider a one-time gift of $30, $50, $100, or sign up to be a WildEarth Guardians’ monthly donor for $10 a month.

I look forward to keeping you updated about my adventure. I'll be on the road, so please feel free to send any questions to Guardians' Development Associate Stephanie Sample in the meantime.
