Walks of Life: Artists & Musicians

The artists and musicians below support the Endangered Species Act.

Stephanie Huerta

Support of the Endangered Species Act is the least we can do to ensure a healthy and harmonious environment for all, humans and animals alike.  We MUST help bring back and protect the miraculous ecosystems that once thrived so beautifully and abundantly.

Nancy Phillips

As an Iranian American that has lived in exile from her country for the past 28 years, I have traveled many parts of the world.  As a child I was fortunate to see many of the world’s natural wonders.  For example, the first time I saw a glacier in Switzerland, I was awe-struck.  The magnitude of its beauty and resonant strength enveloped my entire body.  The time I traveled through India and participated in the daily bathing of elephants invoked compassion and awakened a new love for all things living. I remember feeding wild rams and deer from my hand over the course of a summer on private property in East Texas. In my life, these experiences are all examples of how nature brings a quality of  life that can not be found in any other way.  Over the past 12 years, I have observed a tremendous amount of change in the environment in the United States.  The over-development of the natural lands and lack of attention to protecting natural habitats by policy makers has created an imbalance in our world.  Younger generations are losing the opportunity to connect with nature and have life changing experiences in this way. I hope that this trend of ignoring the importance of nature will shift and the mindfulness of the natural world that is so important right now will be acknowledged.

Without the legal foothold provided by the Endangered Species Act, how many plants and animals would have been wiped out from our planet forever over the last 30 years because of big business, private industry, and a greed-driven quest to eliminate the natural world?  As musicians, we strongly support the Endangered Species Act and its ability to curb ubiquitous, government-sanctioned corporate consumption in our culture.  The natural world is of paramount importance to our work because it is a source of solace and inspiration in a society that is increasingly overrun with concrete, condos, and strip malls.  Our survival and sanity depend upon wild places.  Any changes to the Endangered Species Act would be a travesty not only for these wild places but for human communities as well.
