Promoting Energy Efficiency
Our first option for implementing solutions to the climate crisis must be promoting energy efficiency. The cleanest and cheapest kilowatt hour is the one that is never generated.
WildEarth Guardians is pressuring policy makers and government agencies to make energy efficiency measures more doable for average homeowners. Programs that provide low-interest loans for home improvements to increase energy efficiency is one example.
Be the Change
Implementing energy efficiency measures is in our hands as individuals. Using less electricity is easier than you might think. Simple steps include:
- Turning off lights that aren't being used
- Turning off appliances on power strips when not in use (for example, the lighted time on your microwave is using electricity but chances are you don't need that clock; turn off the appliance on a power strip unless you're actually using to save electricity)
- Bundling up in a warm sweater or blanket in the winter time instead of turning up the heat
- Opening windows and closing blinds to keep your space cool in the summer rather than running an air conditioner
- Adding insulation to your home, so the heat or air you do use stays inside
- Changing your lightbulbs to compact fluorescent
- Buying energy efficiency appliances
